A Wedding in Puglia at the Basilica di Siponto

Some stories begin in the most unexpected way.

For Simone and Samira, it started in Riccione, during one of those summers that seem to belong entirely to youth: long nights, sea air, friends, freedom, and the kind of lightness that only eighteen can hold.

He was from Verona.
She was from Manfredonia.

Two cities far apart, connected first by chance, then by choice.

Their love grew slowly, across distance, phone calls and text messages. It was 2005: no WhatsApp, no instant voice notes, no endless conversations saved in a cloud. Just 160 characters at a time.

Small messages, carefully written.
Words chosen with attention.
Moments shared without excess, and perhaps for that reason, even more meaningful.

The distance never became a limit. Over time, Samira moved to Verona — for her studies, then for work, then for the life she and Simone were building together.

And later, the most beautiful arrival: their daughter, Matilde.

The proposal came in the most intimate way possible.
Maty in Samira’s arms, only a few minutes old.

“Will you marry me?”

A beginning inside another beginning.

A Celebration Rooted in Puglia

For their wedding, Simone and Samira chose to return to Puglia.

Not simply as a destination, but as a gesture of belonging.

Puglia was not just the setting of their day. It was part of the meaning: the light, the sea, the olive trees, the ancient stone, the sense of family, the landscape that carries memory before it becomes scenery.

The olive tree became the quiet symbol of the wedding.

For Samira, it was deeply personal. Her father owns an olive grove and produces olive oil. Some of her most beautiful childhood memories are tied to the olive harvest — a ritual made of hands, land, patience and family.

That symbol appeared throughout the day, from the details of the bridal look to the wedding favors, creating a thread between past and present.

The ceremony took place at the Basilica di Siponto, one of the most evocative historical sites near Manfredonia.

The reception was held at Villa Scapone, a sea-facing property on the Gargano coast, chosen at the time for its Mediterranean atmosphere and its view over the Adriatic.

Together, these elements shaped a wedding that felt completely connected to the place: the Basilica, the olive tree, the sea.

Not decoration.
Identity.

“We wanted our wedding not only to take place in Puglia, but to carry its mark: the olive tree, the sea-facing location, and the Basilica. Three elements that, together, created the perfect frame for our day. I could not have been happier to honour the place where I was born, breathing every moment of that day as something deeply familiar. Like home.”

And that is exactly what Puglia gave to the day.

A feeling of home.
Of warmth.
Of sun, salt, stone and memory.

The Preparation

Wedding mornings always carry a particular kind of energy.

There is movement, anticipation, a little tension in the air. The day that has been imagined for months — sometimes years — suddenly becomes real.

The presence of the photographers often marks that shift.

The beginning of the ritual.
The official start of the story.

Simone’s preparation was quiet, elegant and composed. His look reflected a clean, masculine simplicity, with an Emporio Armani suit and shoes.

Samira’s preparation had a softer rhythm: bridal details, gestures, fabric, light, the presence of the people closest to her. Her dress by Papilio Bridal, Jimmy Choo shoes and Atelier Emé hair accessory created a refined bridal look, delicate but never excessive.

The beauty of this part of the day is not only in the details themselves, but in the atmosphere around them.

The room before the dress is worn.
The hands helping with the final touches.
The silence before leaving.
The awareness that nothing will feel exactly the same after that moment.

The Ceremony at the Basilica di Siponto

The Basilica di Siponto is one of those places that immediately changes the rhythm of a wedding.

It does not need to impress with abundance.

Its strength is in the opposite: proportion, silence, history, restraint.

The medieval basilica stands near Manfredonia as a place of ancient spirituality, once connected to the passage and devotion of pilgrims. Its architecture feels unusual compared to more traditional churches: compact, essential, almost geometric in its presence.

There is something deeply powerful in that simplicity.

The stone, the arches, the filtered light, the sense of time layered into the walls.

Next to the Basilica stands the contemporary installation by Edoardo Tresoldi, built over the remains of the early Christian basilica. A monumental wire mesh structure that reimagines the ancient volume of the church, creating a dialogue between absence and presence, memory and architecture.

For a wedding photographer, a place like this is not only beautiful.

It requires attention.

The space is strong.
The history is strong.
The light is strong.

The images must respect all of it without becoming overwhelmed by it.

Simone and Samira’s ceremony unfolded with the kind of emotion that builds slowly and then arrives all at once: the entrance, the first glance, the tears, the vows, the rings, the quiet intensity of saying yes in front of everyone they love.

A ceremony shaped by faith, family and place.

Planning a ceremony in a historic church in Puglia?
Every location carries its own rhythm, light and atmosphere. My work is to read it carefully, so the images feel connected to the place, not simply taken there.

Portraits in Manfredonia

Samira wanted the portraits to remain connected to her land.

Not a generic beautiful location.
Not a backdrop chosen only because it was picturesque.

She wanted something that felt like Puglia.

A rural landscape.
A trace of the countryside.
If possible, the presence of prickly pears.

The day before the wedding, I spent time looking for a place that could hold that feeling.

There is something important in this part of the work, especially for destination weddings. You cannot photograph a place well if you do not first observe it. You need to understand its light, its textures, its rhythm, its imperfections.

At first, everything seemed possible.

The road.
The dry landscape.
The industrial edges of Manfredonia.
The open countryside.
The walls, the fields, the small unexpected corners.

Then, after almost an hour of searching, the landscape opened.

A raw rural area, a quiet abandoned building, and not far from it, a green wall of prickly pears.

It was the right place.

Not perfect in the polished sense.
Perfect because it belonged to the story.

The portraits became a way to bring Samira’s origins into the visual narrative of the wedding: the dry earth, the southern light, the wild texture of the landscape, the contrast between elegance and territory.

This is where a wedding in Puglia becomes more than a beautiful celebration.

It becomes specific.
Personal.
Rooted.

Reception on the Gargano Coast

At the time of their wedding, Simone and Samira chose Villa Scapone for the reception — a sea-facing property on the Gargano coast, remembered here as part of their personal story.

Set above the Adriatic, the location offered a dramatic Mediterranean view, with the sea opening below and the evening light softening the intensity of the September sun.

The day slowly moved from ceremony to celebration.

The warmth of the afternoon gave way to a fresher sea breeze. Guests gathered, talked, laughed, danced. The atmosphere became lighter, more festive, more instinctive.

There are weddings where the place remains in the background.

This was not one of them.

Here, Puglia was everywhere: in the light, in the colours, in the food, in the air, in the way people celebrated. It was not decorative. It was emotional geography.

The coast, the Basilica, the olive tree, the family memories, the journey from Verona to Manfredonia — everything became part of the same visual story.

A wedding made of roots and movement.

Of distance and return.

Of two people who started far apart and built a life that brought everyone together, in the place where part of that life had begun.

Planning a Wedding in Puglia

Puglia is one of the most powerful places in Italy for a wedding, not because it tries to be perfect, but because it carries a strong sense of identity.

The light is generous.
The landscapes are distinctive.
The architecture has history.
The sea is always close.
And every celebration seems to hold something deeply connected to family, memory and place.

For couples planning a destination wedding in Puglia, the most beautiful result often comes when the location is not treated as scenery, but as part of the story.

That is where photography becomes more intentional.

Not only documenting what happened, but understanding why that place mattered.

If you are planning a wedding in Puglia — between the sea, the countryside, a historic church, a family estate or a meaningful place connected to your story — I would be glad to hear more about your day.
